Pine History Tidbits: Wexford Camp

I assumed “The Heights” was simply a name a builder gave to a housing development but “The Heights” was in fact a campground.

Wexford Camp was near Cross Roads Presbyterian Church and every year they had a bible conference at “The Heights”.

There are several articles I found on the subject but here is just one of them from August 10, 1929 in the Pittsburgh Press, page 10.

Pine History Tidbits: Inclusion of Women

One of the great mysteries of Wexford is the location of Brooker’s Grove and/or Wexford Park. In one of the earliest articles I’ve found mentioning Brooker’s Grove/Wexford Park/Wexford Grove they advertise a commercial club using Wexford for their destination picnic.

But what made me take notice was the phrase, “One of the features of both functions is the presence of women.” Sad world they lived in that the inclusion of women was actually newsworthy.

This article was published in the Pittsburgh Press on June 18, 1914 on page 18.

Pine History Tidbits: 1,000 acres burn

Wexford Volunteer Fire Department worked hard to help extinguish parts of a wildfire in Bradfordwood on May 7, 1934. The Bradfordwood fire burned 100 acres while the Sewickley fire burned 800 acres.

A twelve day drought was to blame for the fire and 10,000 acres in PA had burned.
