Pine History Tidbit: Fire Department Memorial Day Picnic

Pittsburgh Press. May 28, 1922. Page 68.

I have never heard of Decoration Day until this clipping. Decoration Day was declared by General John A. Logan who fought in the American-Mexican War and later became a General for the Union Army during the Civil War.

Beginning during the Civil War and continuing for years after, Confederate widows took care of gravestones for their soldiers. Although Decoration Day is credited with Confederate widows, there are many examples of Union widows doing the same thing.

To keep this tradition going, Decoration Day was declared by Logan.

As the years went on and more wars were fought, the day moved from a Civil War remembrance to one of honoring all of our fallen veterans.

Memorial Day was declared in 1971.

From 1868 – 1970, Decoration Day was celebrated on May 30. Today, Memorial Day is the last Monday in May.

Pine History Tidbit: To Complete Perry Highway

In the Pittsburgh Press, on February 26, 1921, it was announced that the final construction of approximately 2 1/2 miles of Perry Highway would be completed very soon. The new section of road was near Pine Creek and Wexford.

The first main section of road work would take place near the old post office of Keown and Wexford with a second section being built near Wexford to Brush Creek.

Once complete, a paved road would connect the northern border of Allegheny County to the Pittsburgh city limit. The state was also ready to continue the paving all the way to Zelienople. These improvements, along with many others would connect one long road from Pittsburgh to Erie.

This wasn’t the first such road. The old Perrysville Pike road connected all the way to Erie.
